Triathlon: An athletic contest consisting of three different events, typically swimming, cycling, and long-distance running.

Teacher Kari Raeburn and a few students took part in an event called the PDX Triathlon at Blue Lake Park last weekend. This year marked the 34th annual PDX Triathlon. The PDX Triathlon is an event which consists of swimming 400 meters (equal to 16 lengths of the CHS pool), biking 10 miles and running two miles.

“I compete in triathlons a couple of times a year, and there’s a youth division but very few compete,” says Raeburn.

She was talking about triathlons with a a group of students, and they were up for the challenge of joining her, she says.

Students who took part in the PDX Triathlon include Cameron Berry, Joel Cross, Oscar Reyes, Olivia Schloth and Johnny Simonson. The group partaking in the event were training at Centennial High School after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  On Tuesdays the group swam in the pool in order to condition for the event. On Thursdays they biked and ran.

“I feel prepared for the triathlon,” says Kameron Berry, a couple of days before the event.

“I like it (triathlons). It’s fun to do, I think I’m prepared. I’d do the best in biking, I think,” says Joel Cross, who took third in his division.

“I’m a little nervous, I think (I’m most prepared) for the swimming,” saai Olivia Schloth, who also finished the event.

¨I finished second in my age group. It went pretty good. It felt like I was dying during the swim, once I got to the bike, I had no music going so I was in Zen mode,” said Berry.

¨I finished 3rd in my age group,” said Joel Cross.

¨It was good, I had a bad swim but really good bike and a really good run, in fact I PR’d in the run. I was 4th in my age group,” said Raeburn.

¨Next year we’re looking forward to a bigger team,” she added.
