Five Receive Let ‘Em Play Scholarship
The annual Let Em Play Scholarship provided by the Portland Basketball Referee Association has been awarded to five students at Centennial High School who have done an exceptional job on and off the court. This scholarship has been going on for the last three years, with $250 being spread out among five different basketball players at Centennial High School.
The five players at Centennial who were awarded the scholarship this year are seniors Anthony Barber, Sonam Phuntsok, TJ Tyler and juniors Allie Mckee and Dominique Andrews.
Last year the scholarship was awarded to three girls and two boys while this year it was awarded to three boys and two girls. The purpose of this scholarship according to athletic director Brent Child “Is to offset the fee of playing”. TJ Tyler a player on the basketball team said “Winning the $50 was cool and I was really surprised when I got it in the mail.” The fee to play is $160 so even though this scholarship only covers a small portion of the basketball fee it is a great reward that highlights the amount of work that these basketball athletes have put in.
