It’s been lose one, win one for the boys basketball so far this season as the Eagles have proven to be competitive with their 2-2 start.

Head Coach Osa Esene  The team is trying to find an identity. Guys are trying to get familiar with their roles.

While the headlines usually go to players who score the most, it appears defense is going to be the team’s strength as they are only allowing 52 a points a game.

“It’s (our defense) not where we want it to be right now, but it is a focus,” said second-year Head Coach Osa Esene. “We are better defensively in the second half of games, so that is a start.  It’s all about learning how to talk and getting better communication.”

The two wins have come against Sandy, 59-52, and South Albany, 63-53.

“Our scoring is so balanced; we have four or five guys averaging about 8 points right now,” said Osene, referring to juniors Dawson Day, Jeret Schmelling, Brendon Ritschard and seniors Austin Seipp and LK Thang.

“The team is starting out slow, but we’re learning and growing together as a team because we’re starting to become more like a family,” Day said.

“We aren’t playing to our full potential right now, but I see our team chemistry coming together. Pretty soon we’re gonna be having a breakout game against a respectable team and we’ll be on our groove,” junior Rhys Atkinson said.

The Eagles next game is home tomorrow at 7:30 pm as part of a double header with the girls who play at 6 pm.  The final tune up games will come after right after Christmas at the Century Tournament.  Game times can be found at OSAA.com.

“The league is tough,” said Osene, “but I don’t see why we can’t finish in the top four.”
