Centennial boys won it all at the Cleveland high school wrestling tournament. On January 5th and 6th, Centennials men’s wrestling team headed to Cleveland highschool for a wrestling tournament they had been to many times before. Head coach Ehren Schneider brought 26 participating wrestlers to the tournament in hopes of coming away with a few champions along with the team title. Centennial placed second last year and had come with great hopes of placing first this year amongst the over 20 participating high schools.
On day one of the tournament, Centennial took the early lead. They built a small 9 point lead over Liberty and Clackamas highschool to be ranked number one. Centennial continued to win throughout the day and accumulated an enormous amount of team points. By the end of day one, Centennial had an unbelievable 50 point plus lead over the now number two Century High School. Centennial’s morale was high and they hoped to continue this season of winning the second day.
11 Centennial boys made it to day two of the tournament, 10 of which had not lost yet and were in the semi finals. During day two, Centennial had four competitors make it to the finals and 8 make it through consolation to place within the top 6 of their 32 person brackets. By the end of the tournament, Centennial had 5 people standing on the podium to receive their top three placement medals along with having two winners with Illia Yurko at the 175 lbs weight class as well as Dale Farness at the 285 lbs weight class. By the end of day two, Centennial built an astounding 40 point lead on the second place school Liberty high and won the Cleveland Don York tournament. Centennial was gifted with a championship plaque along with the title of Cleveland Don York champions.
Centennial’s boys kept the momentum rolling as they headed to Redmond to compete in the Oregon Classic, which is the most prestigious dual tournament in Oregon. Centennial ended up placing seventh and returned home to continue winning. Centennial won their senior night dual by a shocking 72-9 winning all but two matches and again on wednesday and thursday by a combined 107-30 score. Centennial then placed second at their latest tournament in Wilsonville last saturday and hope to continue this era of winning into the future. This is the last week of the regular season and Centennial hopes to achieve their goal of dethroning Canby High School and become district champions. This award is something that Centennial is no stranger too and they believe they can win it this year. Centennial has high hopes for not only the district but the state tournament as well. GO EAGLES !
