We are officially nearing the end of the trimester. Unfortunately students have to take part in the most grueling part of school, finals. For some, finals are as easy as regular school work, while others struggle.
About 37% of high school students experienced feeling sadness or hopelessness in a study conducted by Youth Risk Behavior. It is safe to assume that those feelings were either generated or enhanced by schoolwork. The feelings are made even worse when finals week arrives as many students prioritize studying over their physical and mental well-being.
The reason finals are detested and stress inducing is because they play pivotal roles in determining how your grades turn out. Getting good grades could help students get into more prestigious colleges. In addition, students may pursue good grades in order to please their parents which adds another layer of pressure onto a student. With an abundance of pressure, schools should remind students that they can lend a helping hand to them.
Javier RIsso Santos, a junior at CHS was asked about how he felt about finals. He stated “Finals are pretty stressful as I have to do multiple reviews for different classes. Pre-calc is the most stressful class out of all of them as there’s too much work in that class, and I just simply don’t want to do it.”
With the amount of work students have done this week, they are awfully tired, they just want to be done with finals, but unfortunately there’s still plenty of work to be done. Everyone wants to go to Thanksgiving break due to feeling burnt out. Those 5 days would help everyone relax and refresh their minds. Once the break is over, students come back to school on Monday, December 2nd calm and collected, ready for the start of a new trimester.
It isn’t easy to prepare for a final, let alone having to prepare for multiple. Nonetheless whenever you feel stressed, reach out to a friend, family member, teacher, or another trusted adult. Remember that you are a human not a machine, so go out and enjoy the wonders that human life gives us once in a while.
