With fall sports wrapping up here around Centennial, many students are curious about the most notable teams here at CHS. Below is a recap of the best performing teams for the Eagles.
Women’s Volleyball
Volleyball was highly successful this year with our very own coach Wohlers winning all conference coach of the year. Our team was a very effective built mix of younger rising athletes, and veteran senior leaders led by D1 commit senior Katie Brewer. This team was undoubtedly one of the best in 5A this year; and while we only came second in our conference, the coaching staff and the team took great pride in making it to the playoffs this year. Matched up with 9th ranked Corvallis, we fought hard but in the end we were bested in the first round. While this loss was emotional for the seniors, the volleyball program is overall excited to build upon the success of this year and hoping to come back stronger next year.
Men’s Soccer
Our Soccer team has been one of the best teams from Centennial for several years, and this year was no different, as we finished ranked 5th in the conference. Going to the playoffs is nothing new for our team, so it wasn’t much of a surprise for these incredible athletes. Likewise, we went into the first round of playoffs with confidence, beating Corvallis 3-0 on their home turf. However, the second round came, and the pressure increase was definitely felt. Along with this, the Eagles were matched up with powerhouse number 1 seed Summit. While we fought incredibly hard, Summit overcame us 3-1. Summit beat nearly everyone before us by blowout, so it was a good effort. While many seniors were disappointed, we had multiple first and second team all league awards for our players. Soccer is confident they will come back next year even more refined.
Cross Country
Our Cross Country team cannot be forgotten. This year our Cross Country team did incredible. At the league meet alone, we had over 10 athletes set personal bests on the course. The Cross Country team is definitely training hard and have historically been some of the most in shape athletes at Centennial. We at CHS look forward to supporting them next year so they can have another great season.
Football
Football at CHS is often considered one of our worst sports at the school. And while it is true that they have not been as good in recent history, this year is the first sign of changing times. The Eagles only went 3-6 on the year, but that is an increase in performance compared to the last two years of competition. Additionally, we won the first season opener since 2016, which was generally considered a sign of changing times. This being said, we have high hopes for the team going into next year, especially considering our incoming eighth grade team are undefeated for two years and are undisputed champions.
All of these great teams got recognized in the assembly on Wednesday. It’s clear CHS has many sports to look forward to next year, Centennial is surely headed towards a new era. See you all next year, GO EAGLES!
