In the 2024 season, the Centennial Boys Varsity Soccer team had tough matchups in the preseason games against top teams in 6a and 5a. They battled hard, doing well with a record of 3 wins, 2 losses, and a tie. The team finished their non league games being 5th in state, which is great especially with the hard teams they matched up against. The league games started and their first game was against Milwakuie beating them 1-0 stopping their undefeated season. They kept playing hard every single match and ended their season with a record of 3 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties. Overall record was 7 wins, 5 loses, and 4 ties.
The boys varsity made the state playoffs with almost getting the chance to host the first round here at their home field. They ended up dropping from 8th in state to 9th which means they had to travel for the first round of playoffs with their matchup against 8th in state Corvallis High School. They believed that they were the better team and should’ve been able to host the game. They took it seriously and went over to their home field and ended up beating them 3-0. The entire game they had control over them from the back line to the forwards.
Centennial went through to quarterfinals facing up against #1 in state Summit High School in Bend, having to travel there. The team stayed in a hotel on Friday night to be ready for their game on Saturday which is around a 3 hour drive.
The boys had to play without a full squad missing key player Alex Fulgencio due to injury, which was a strong part of the team’s success this season. They played hard throughout the whole match. Unfortunately, Centennial came short and lost 1-3 ending the season in the quarterfinals. Summit is a very good team being 3x state champions with only 2 losses their entire season. I would say the Centennial boys gave them a very hard fight for Summit to get their win over Centennial.
Making it through quarterfinals was a big accomplishment from the team with hard work, and determination. The team’s success happened with having great positive leaders, believing in each other, and having the heart to play and fight for their teammates. Although they came up short in the state playoffs, they are hoping to carry this type of leadership to the next upcoming years.
