On Thursday September 14th, Centennial held the club fair in the hallway outside the cafeteria. There was a similar event for freshman orientation. Students probably noticed the tables set up while grabbing lunch. Around 16 clubs/sports teams participated, even though the school provided the tables it was up to the clubs to actually decorate them. Wrestling brought quite the crowd for all three lunches. No surprise with their guerilla marketing tactics to garner attention. Mr. Schneider, the head wrestling coach, would frequently advertise the wrestling club table over the PA system. Students came up to them the whole time and even had students trying to track down Schneider to talk more about it.
The fervor for the fair died down for third lunch, which is the least populated. By noon, people were ready to go home. Many students who walked by kept asking, “When will this be over?” “When is lunch done?” which shows that people are more focused on getting out of here than learning about the clubs/sports
The head of Student Activities, Charles Self, confirmed in an interview the purpose of the fair, “There are so many clubs and sports available here at CHS, there’s something for everyone to be a part of.” If students have time available in their schedule an extracurricular club or sport could be great for them. Here at CHS, as many sophomores and fellow upperclassmen know, clubs and sports are a huge part of our school community.
The Sun program is what most clubs are funded by. You only have to fill out a form to be a member of the Sun program. Some clubs will have the form in the room they are run in and if they don’t, go to the Sunroom in the Counseling Hall and ask for one.
Additionally, there are a few clubs outside of Sun. A notable example is the Dungeons and Dragons club in Mr. Blackburn’s room (104), which is known to not be completely affiliated with Sun. Unlike most other clubs you don’t need to have ever signed a Sun form to participate, however you do need to be in the program to get the provided food in the cafeteria. Lakotah Aamold said the food served after school is, “Better than the food they serve at lunch.”
Even though the third lunch wasn’t as lively as the others, the club fair had an amazing kick off. It now has the possibility of becoming a monthly event according to Mr. Self and Marisol Jeronimo when asked.
