Tennis Team Update

I look up, the sun blazing on my skin. I took two steps back, looked up once more before I bounced the ball. Took two deep breaths, throwing the ball, two heads above me and boom! I hit it!

With the start of spring sports I interviewed the tennis boys and girls teams on how their first games went.

Some tennis terms beforehand: a couple that tennis players use are forehand and backhand. Forehand is made by swinging the tennis racket across the body on the same side as the main hand with which the racket is held. Backhand it is made by swinging the racket away from the body on the opposite side to the strong hand.

I first interviewed the girls JV and varsity teams. I will start off with the varsity player Cecelia Nhung T. Nguyen.
I started off asking, “Were you excited for your first meet this season?” She said “yes I was, I was really excited because during COVID I had to wear a mask. So this is my first season in high school not wearing a mask.” I then asked, “How did you do in your first tennis match?” She said “Did really good for me. And the other girl had some really good rallies, it was back and forth.”

I then interviewed Thao “Tammy” Chu. I first asked her, “Were you excited for your first meet this season?” She said, “I was really excited for the first meet this season. Because it has been a while since we actually had tennis meets because of COVID, since last year we barely had any matches. And being able to play league matches now is just really exciting.” I then asked her, “How did you do in your first tennis match?” She said, “I did really well. More than I thought I would. I thought I would be really rusty, but it turns out everyone was really rusty. But I did pretty well, and won my first match.” I last asked, “Was there anything you messed up on, and if so, is there anything you think you could improve on?” She said “Yeah there’s a lot of stuff like going into the rules and remembering how to play because we haven’t done it in a year, but after playing a couple games it kinda comes back to you.”

I then interviewed JV player Andy Bui, and asked him “Were you excited for your first meet this season?” he said, “Yeah I was really happy, but I thought I would do bad.” I then asked him, “How did you do in your first tennis match?” He said, “It was horrible. It was zero, and eight.” I last asked, “Was there anything you messed up on, and if so, is there anything you think you could improve on?” He said, “Most of my serves were in the net, my forehand was ok and my backhand wasn’t good and just going for the ball.”

I last interviewed varsity player Stanley Eng, and asked him “Were you excited for your first meet this season?” he said, “I was really happy, and excited!” I then asked him, “How did you do in your first tennis match?” He said, “I was winning the second set, and then it started to rain.” I last asked, “Was there anything you messed up on, and if so, is there anything you think you could improve on?” He said, “My serves were really good, but my groundstrokes were inconsistent.”

So, in conclusion the tennis players this year had fun and had many things to work on, but I’m ready to see what happens next year.
