Boys Start Slow; Youth Shows Improvement

The boys basketball season has been a tough, but a hard fought one so far. Their last game was against the Sandy Pioneers last Friday. Coach John Poetsch said that this was a very competitive game for the boys. The Pioneers came out on top, winning 60-41.

The boys took their first win on Jan. 22 against Reynolds, beating them 52-41. “ I always feel good about winning,” said Poetsch. “We cut down turnovers and Travis Johnson had a very good game. He had good defense and scored 22 points. Something that went different is we played a more evenly matched opponent. But we’re very young and getting better and there’s no one in the state that’s a younger team than us. We have many freshmen and sophomores, and sometimes you gotta learn the hard way and take the hard knocks.”

The boy’s game on Jan. 17, was against the David Douglas Scots.  This game was their ‘pink out’ game, where both teams and audiences wore pink to support breast cancer awareness. The Scotts came on top, beating Centennial 74-47.

The boys also took on the Clackamas Cavaliers away on Jan. 14.  The boys lost 74-33. “I think one thing our team could work on is team work,” said varsity sophomore, Jalen Ross. “This could help us get some wins on the board.”

The boy’s first league game was on Jan. 10, at Barlow High School.  The Bruin’s came out on top beating the Eagles 92-30.

The boys currently have a league record of 1-3.  Poetsch said “The boys basketball league this year is a powerhouse. We have 5 teams that are ranked top 12 in the state, so for a young team it’s a death march. They’re showing some resilience and when they continue to show up to practice every morning, they are showing just how strong they are.”
