The Centennial Eagles boys tennis team is getting off to a good start this season led by first year Head Coach Jimmy Mei. Mei took over the program after one year Head Coach Alex Grandjean left.  Along with coaching tennis Mei also teaches math at Centennial.

The Eagles are looking to improve upon last season and continue to get better throughout this season.  The captain of this year’s team is Senior Frankie Moua, Moua has been playing tennis for the last couple of years and is one of the star players on the team. The player that Mei said to watch out for is junior Nathan Skarphol. “He’s going to have a good season,” Mei said.

Since the team hasn’t been able to practice outside on the courts due to the rainy weather, they have been practicing in the gym and conditioning in the hallways. The weather also cancelled the Eagle’s first meet of the season. They are scheduled to have three meets this week Wednesday vs Reynolds, Thursday vs Barlow and Friday vs Franklin. Due to the forecasted weather, the games this week have a possibility of being cancelled.

Centennial hasn’t been known for its tennis program but Mei is looking to change that and install confidence in his current team. One of Mei’s goals for this season are to “help the team become more consistent in their techniques.” Mei also said he wants to focus on mental training which he believes will build confidence within the players  and help them compete with all levels of competition.

Along with improving and getting better, Mei said he wants his team “to grow instead of always focusing on winning.” To have a successful season, the Eagles will need to listen to Mei and soak in his advice and training, if the team is able to do this then they will be on the path of having a very good season.
