Rugby Starts Games Saturday

The girls rugby team first game is on March 19 at Canby High School.

All home games will be at Delta Park.

This is coach Tom Bremer’s second year as head coach for the rugby team. Last year the girls had no official scores because they just scrimmaged due to the fact that they didn’t have enough players.

This year the rugby team has the required amount of players and will be able to officially compete.

Bremer commented, “Rugby is a club sport not a school sport.” The girls will be playing teams from Oregon and Washington, with most Oregon teams coming from the Willamette Valley.

But there is also a team in Pendleton. The closest teams the girls will be competing against are Reynolds and Cleveland.

Bremer said,  “ I hope to build a family spirit and want everyone to play safe and fun.”

He predicts that team will be competitive and has a lot of good athletes. His biggest concern for the season is to prevent injuries.

Bremer encourages more girls to come out and play rugby. Anyone trying to join can contact coach Bremer or any girl on the team.

Practices are held after school at Centennial on the field by the tennis courts.
